Teachers are able to evaluate themselves. The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
Rationale 1: I created this student survey as part of my action research. The survey asked students to compare two different styles of learning. Students compared learning a lesson from the textbook to learning a lesson from a WebQuest. Both lessons focused on regions of the United States in 4th grade social studies. I developed this survey so that I would have qualitative as well as quantitative data to compare as a result of the teaching. They survey was very specific in asking students how they preferred to learn, how they felt they learned more information, how they found information easier, and which one they participated in more. Students were encouraged to be honest as their results were not grades. It was a way for me to get valuable feedback on the two types of teaching techniques.
After collecting the student surveys, I was amazed at the ease of presenting my findings. I was even more amazed at the outcome. The majority of students chose the WebQuest over learning from the textbook. Their individualized feedback was extremely helpful to me in developing further lessons. Students felt value to have an opinion in their person learning experience. It was a valuable instrument for all of us. I continue to use student surveys in other areas to get detailed feedback.

9.K.1 The teacher understands methods of inquiry that provide him/her with a variety of self-assessment and problem-solving strategies for reflecting on his/her practice, its influences on students’ growth and learning, and the complex interactions between them.
Using student surveys has helped me to self-reflect on teaching techniques and student needs. It has helped me to focus on what students needs are and whether or not they are being met in the best possible way. Student surveys have also helped students have an active role in helping to decide how they learn best.
9.S.2 The teacher uses classroom observation, information about students, cultural, social, and philosophical frameworks, and research as sources for evaluating the outcomes of teaching and learning and as a basis for reflecting on and revising practice.
By reflecting on student surveys, I feel I have become a better teacher. Learning is a life-long process, not only for my students, but for me as well. Self-evaluation is a critical element in teaching.
9.D.2 The teacher is committed to reflection, assessment, and learning as an ongoing process.
Based on periodic student surveys and self-reflection, I am able to adjust the ways that I teach my students. I become more aware of their needs and preferences to learning.
